William "Bill" Owen, of Scarsdale, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 7, after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. Born in 1931 in Minneapolis, Minn., Bill spent his childhood years fishing and boating on Lake Minnetonka. After graduating high school, he attended Stanford University for two years and then finished at the University of Minnesota, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the early 1950s, and then earned a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in the new field of air conditioning.

While at the University of Minnesota, he met the love of his life, Anne, and the two were married in 1954. Bill gained employment in the HVAC division at Westinghouse, first as an engineer and then in sales, which led to their first move to Staunton, Virginia, then to Columbia, S.C, Coral Gables, Florida, and, finally, to Scarsdale, N.Y. In 1966, he left Westinghouse to start his own executive recruiting company, Owen, Webb Associates on Park Avenue in Manhattan, which he led for 20 successful years. Bill's next business venture was the purchase of Border Sales, a plumbing and heating business in Port Chester, N.Y., in 1985. He expanded this enterprise to multiple retail and wholesale locations throughout Westchester County, and continued to be active in the business as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until his death.

Bill was an enthusiastic philanthropist and worked with several community groups, including the Port Chester Chamber of Commerce. He also lent his expertise to new entrepreneurs through the business organization SCORE. Through that work, Bill became very interested in supporting the efforts of organizations working to reduce criminal recidivism.

In his younger days, Bill was a very accomplished tennis player, and he also liked to run, sail, and swim. He loved the beach and spent many happy hours with his friends and family in Quogue, N.Y. In 1998, he purchased a family summer home on Block Island, R.I. In his later years he enjoyed hiking and exploring new areas, always with his GPS in hand, plotting maps to show his family later on. He is survived by his wife Anne, of Scarsdale; and three children, Phillip Owen of Annapolis, Maryland; Charles Owen of Pompano Beach, Florida, and wife Bella; Catherine Owen Koning of Keene, N.H. and her husband Robert; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Brian and Mia. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's name can be made to the Block Island Medical Center.
