William J. (Hutch) Hutchins, Jr., 80
Long time island resident “Hutch” passed away at home in Highland Beach, Florida on April 22, 2020, of complications from Parkinsons and kidney disease. His wife Joanne was by his side.
Born in New Haven, Conn. on Aug. 23, 1939, Hutch graduated from Quinnipiac College with a Business Administration degree and worked for Southern New England Telephone Company for 38 years.
He served as an officer on the Branford (Conn.) Police Department and was a member of the Branford Fire Department. He was also a longtime member of the Branford Yacht Club and the Westbrook Elks.
He had a love of the water from an early age, owned several powerboats, and began cruising to Block Island in the early 1970s. The family soon spent summers aboard the Rabbit Hutch at the Block Island Boat Basin, where Hutch was the mayor of “C” Dock for many summers.
When there was an opportunity to buy a home on the island, he moved the family to Calico Hill where many happy summer memories were made. Upon retiring from the phone company, he and Joanne became year-round island residents for 10 years. During that time, he served on the Block Island Town Council. He was an active member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and could always be counted on to sell you a ticket to the annual church raffle.
Hutch leaves his wife Joanne; children Debbie, Ann Lee, Susan, Robin and Rick; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service and burial will take place on Block Island later this summer when travel restrictions are lifted.
