Virginia Murphy, 53
Virginia Murphy, of Durham, Conn., and Block Island, R.I., died in her home surrounded by her family on May 14, 2015. She was 53 years old.
Virginia is survived by her loving husband, Bill, of Durham, Conn., and Block Island, R.I.; her adoring son Chris of Boston, Mass.; her brother-in-law Michael Murphy and wife Margaret (Gunter) of Needham, Mass., and Block Island, R.I.; her brother-in-law James Murphy and wife Stephanie (Kalinyak) of Melbourne, Florida and Block Island, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews and their children. Virginia was born on Dec. 21, 1961 in Morristown, New Jersey. She attended Morristown High School and graduated with honors from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in mathematics and a minor in computer science. She worked as a Systems Programmer for Beneficial Corporation for 20 years retiring in 2003 to spend more time with her son. Virginia was a 20-year congregant at Saint Lawrence the Martyr Parish in Chester, New Jersey and served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist for 15 years also attending Saint Andrews Parish whenever on Island. Upon moving to Durham in 2013, she became a congregant at Notre Dame Parish also serving as a Eucharistic Minister.
Virginia and Bill were married at the Church of the Redeemer in Morristown, New Jersey on July 9, 1983 and welcomed son Chris four years later. She was a wonderful wife and mother and will be sorely missed, yet never forgotten, by her husband and son.
Bill introduced Virginia to Block Island in 1981; he has summered here since his birth 54 years ago. She loved Block Island from the very start and one of her last wishes was that her remains would be interred next to her in-laws, William and Thelma (Tinker) Murphy at the Island Cemetery.
In August of 2014, Virginia was diagnosed with a very aggressive stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. She underwent traditional chemotherapy at Hartford Hospital and then entered a clinical trial at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston this past January.
