To the Editor,
As many of you know, we have been actively engaged in a project to transform the Block Island Medical Center by updating and expanding critically important clinical space and adding much-needed housing for visiting medical residents, students, and physicians. The Center, which has not been updated in any meaningful way since it was built in 1989, has never been busier, as more and more residents and visitors are seeking care at the only healthcare facility on the island. We are excited that the renovation and expansion will re-make our facility into one of the best of its kind and one that will take us into the next 30-plus years.
We are feeling the same impacts as everyone else, including a severely constricted supply chain and increased prices. The economic disruption is hitting those in the building trades especially hard and is putting upward pressure on construction costs. Our project team continues to work carefully with our architect to make wise choices for the best product at the best overall cost.
We will remodel the clinical space to best serve the primary and emergency care needs of all on the island and update all the mechanical systems in the building, making them as energy efficient as possible. We will add housing for visiting medical students and providers in a new, separate building behind the Medical Center, which will provide a campus-like feel to our facilities, better access to services, and improve privacy for our users.
Our revised plans will be used to bid out the project to secure a general contractor and subcontractors for the job. Coordinated planning of our medical staff and building team will enable us to maintain care delivery in the building throughout the construction process.
Block Island Health Services is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization providing medical services on the island through the Medical Center. All costs associated with the transformation of the Center will be paid for by donations from the community. We are deeply gratified by the extraordinary response to our fundraising appeal. Over $6 million has been donated and pledged to date, and we will continue our outreach in earnest to fully fund the construction and to increase our endowment to steward this investment in the future of health care on Block Island.
We are so grateful to all who have generously committed to our capital campaign to remake the Medical Center to serve Block Islanders today and for the next generations; we thank each of you in our community for your continued support of our efforts and look forward to sharing more in the future.
