Election Reminders
Last Day to Register: The last day to register to vote in the September 11, 2012 Party Primary Election is Sunday, August 12, 2012.  If you are a New Shoreham resident, you may register at the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall, Old Town Road Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. before the deadline, or at the Police Station on Beach Avenue on Sunday August 12, 2012 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Absentee Ballot Applications Available:  Mail (“absentee”) ballot applications for the Primary are available at the Town Clerk’s Office.  You must apply by August 21, 2012.

FEMA and the Town of New Shoreham are updating our communities flood maps with the ultimate goal of protecting the community and its citizens from flood related losses.
FEMA develops our communities new National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Maps as floodplains are constantly changing due to construction and environmental changes such as rain, wind, poor drainage and wave action.  This information is provided to communities in the form of Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for the communities to use, better identify, assess, communicate about and mitigate flood risk.  FIRMs are used by insurance agents and lenders to determine where flood insurance must be purchased and how much that insurance will cost property owners.
The new flood maps will provide updated information about flood risk that will allow homeowners to make more informed decisions about protecting their home.  Property owners may find that their flood risk has increased, decreased or stayed the same since the last time the Town adopted the Flood Maps.
The Town and FEMA encourage citizens to review the proposed FIRMs to learn about their flood risk and identify any questions they have with the information provided.  If you own property on the western shoreline of the Island, in particular from Grace’s Cove Road north, Champlin Road (Coast Guard Road) to the North Light House and along the shoreline of the Great Salt Pond, you are located in areas of proposed velocity zone increase which may affect your flood insurance rates.  After reviewing the proposed FIRMs, there are two ways citizens can provide feedback on the FIRMs (1) submit comments or (2) make an appeal.
The proposed FIRMs are available for review at Town Hall in the Building Department weekdays 8am to 3pm.  If you have any questions after reviewing the FIRMs please contact Marc Tillson, local Floodplain Coordinator @466-3206 or 466-3216.

Invitation to Bid
The Block Island Land Trust is soliciting mowing bids for its newly acquired Gorham lots,  
Plat 10, Lots 26-2 & 26-3 (3.5 acres).  Prior to submitting bids, interested bidders must contact Harold Hatfield, Stewardship Coordinator (401-932-7979), and attend a pre-bid conference to delineate the mowing area.  A map is available upon request from the Block Island Land Trust:  Please contact Heidi Tarbox at 860-468-0145 or email  Specifications: Mow to a height of 4 inches.  Mow around trees. Completion by August 31, 2012.  Bids will be received by the Block Island Land Trust until 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday, August 20, 2012.  Bids will be opened and read aloud at the August 20, 2012 Land Trust meeting at 2:45 p.m. at the Town Hall, Old Town Road, Block Island, and may be awarded at that time.  The Land Trust reserves the right to reject any and all bids. Insurance:  Mowing contractors are required to carry liability insurance consistent with Town of New Shoreham requirements.  Proof of insurance must be supplied to the Land Trust with bid.

The Building Official will be available Monday through Thursdays for the summer.  Please schedule your appointments and inspections accordingly.  The Building Department will remain open Monday through Friday.
