Power Outage Information

The following was sent in by BIPCo’s President Jeffery Wright:

The power to the National Grid substation in Wakefiled was interrupted on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 4:54 p.m., causing an island-wide outage. The Block Island Power Company restored power within approximately 50 minutes by using its backup generators. National Grid informed BIPCo that a protective relay was responsible for cutting the power to the substation after sensing an internal fault — the fault was unrelated to the submarine cable issues or any related equipment. It was also unrelated to any wind generation or excessive island demand.

Shortly before 10 p.m., National Grid gave BIPCo permission to transfer back to the cable, which was done with no impact to customers. BIPCo’s back-up generation performed as designed, and the crews did a fantastic job keeping the lights on.

National Grid is continuing its investigation into the root cause of the outage.
