Power Company cautions against scam

Mon, 09/25/2017 - 2:45pm

The following was issued by the Power Company on Thursday, Sept. 21:

Earlier on Thursday, a Block Island business owner reported that they received a phone call from someone claiming to be from National Grid. They were told that their electric meter would be pulled within a half hour because they had not paid their bill and this could be resolved by paying with a credit card over the phone.

This is a scam! National Grid nor anyone other than the Block Island Power Company can remove a meter for non-payment. Furthermore, Block Island Power Company policy provides any customer ample time to settle an account before we resort to removing a meter.

If you receive a call from anyone claiming they are going to pull your electric meter do not give them any payment, notify the Block Island Police Department, (466-3220) and please call us for verification or with any questions.

Thank you,

Tracy Fredericks
