Our neighbor, our colleague, our friend
The following resolution honoring Norris Pike was drafted by Martha Ball, in collaboration with others, and is presented here in its entirety:
Whereas, F. Norris Pike, proud descendant of Block Island's early settlers, spent his early years here, attended Wentworth Institute in Boston, honing skills come naturally to him and within a few short years of graduation returned to his native home to start building his own business, over the years the houses he built becoming known examples of traditional design and fine workmanship and
Whereas, this son of a fisherman, father to two children raised on this island, grown to become a doctor and a lawyer, has devoted a goodly portion of his adult life to the betterment of his community, through service on boards and committees too many to enumerate, always injecting wisdom born of amassed knowledge and common sense come from a practical view of life, and
Whereas, when the seas become rough with contention and discord, Norris has an ability to stop the wind and calm the sea with a few well chosen words of tempering humor, and
Whereas, service comes in many forms, fighting for your town, from time on the Planning Board, to the infamous “Moped Wars” of the 1980's when then-Councilor Norris Pike proposed secession be given consideration when we, unable to achieve statutory recourse, a remark which catapulted his tiny town into the international press, working on the Charter Commission, and returning to a seat as Second Warden to shepherd a decades' held vision of local control of the power company, realized at last in concert with the construction of the first offshore wind farm in the United States, a melding of old dreams and new technologies, looking, as always, to the future of this community and
Whereas, through it all this joiner of wood has brought to the chambers of governance the same understated precision that is needed to make a house able to stand strong and tall against a gale, working through volumes of paperwork, with sharp intelligence, dogged determination, occasional bouts of pigheadedness, but always with an abiding love for this place he has always called home.
Now therefore be it resolved… we offer thanks to — and for — for our neighbor, colleague, and friend, for all he has done and continues to do.
