Order this... Zuppa di Pesche at Aldo's

Aldo’s Restaurant, famous for its Flaming Cheese Wheel, is also known for its very popular Zuppa di Pesche (seafood soup). This dish is full of all kinds of seafood. As co-owner Anna Papa said, “Once people order it, they never stop ordering it.”

Zuppa di Pesche is certainly more than what most of us think of as a soup. Mussels, shrimp, clams, oysters, scallops, and lobster are quickly sautéed together and served over a bed of linquini pasta. There’s a selection of sauces as a finish — the red marinara is the favorite, but simple garlic and oil is a choice,  as is a spicier fra diavolo. “It’s a seafood lover’s delight,”

Steve Papa, his son Stevie, and Matt Beland are in the kitchen, supported by several more staff members during busy times. Anna and Christina Papa joined us, too, extending their well-known generosity and warm hospitality. We tasted and talked. It was a merry gathering.

The Flaming Cheese Wheel is another recommendation for an evening meal at Aldo’s. Steve brought the idea back from Aruba and it has become a hit. An indentation in the top of a large wheel of Parmesan cheese is infused with cognac and then ignited. Pasta is tossed and coated in the warmed cheese and then plated. The rich pasta with cheese, along with the drama and fun of it all, will bring us back to Aldo’s for another taste.

And don’t forget all of Aldo’s pizzas — there’s even a baked eggplant Parmesan pizza. Anything on the menu is “to go,” so think of calling in an order to pick up on your way home from the beach. There’s also a gluten-free dinner menu. — Becky Ballard
