Long time cottager on Block Island, Dr. Mary Bridge passed away October 1 after a long illness. She was 88.

Born on May 28, 1924, in Seattle, Washington, she graduated from Stanford University with an undergraduate degree in Chinese Studies. She received her medical degree from the University of Washington.

Mary started visiting Block Island in the early 70s and purchased a home in 1988. She will be remembered for her special house concerts on the island featuring members of the New York Philharmonic.

She had a passion for the humane treatment of animals and was an active member in the Block Island Volunteers for Animals. She truly loved Block Island and the many friends she made.

Toward the end of her life in May of 2012, she experienced one of her greatest joys by hosting a family reunion on the island in celebration of her 88th birthday.

Mary was a kind and generous person and was loved by many. Her intellect and curiosity about everything from space to computers to watch repair kept her learning and teaching her entire life. We were blessed to have her in our lives.

Survivors include a niece, Helen (Fred) Flemming of Bellingham, Wa., and three nephews, Chris (Patti) of Lakewood, Wa., Phil (Jan) of Vancover, Wa., and Carl (Janet) of Gig Harbor, Wa. At her request, a private family service will be held on Block Island at a later date. Memorials may be made to: Block Island Volunteers for Animals, P. O. Box 402, Block Island, Rhode Island, 02807.
