Obituary: George Valentine
George W. Valentine, M.D., 81, of Center Road, Block Island, passed away Saturday evening, July 2, at home.
He was the husband of Jean Ann (Holm) Valentine. They were married for 60 years.
Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, a son of the late Earl and Laura (Knollmeyer) Valentine, he resided in Cheshire, Connecticut, before becoming a resident of Block Island in 1985.
Dr. Valentine served as chair of the Anesthesiology Department at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury and was an anesthesiologist at Waterbury Hospital. He was a graduate of Yale University, served his internship at Waterbury Hospital and his residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut.
He was also a captain with the U.S. Air Force, serving in France, a past president of the Connecticut Society of Anesthesiologists, a founder of the Waterbury Extended Care Facility, and former member of the Block Island Medical Board and Zoning Board. He was awarded a two year scholarship at St. George’s School in Middletown, when he attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Patricia Valentine Twickler of Branford, Connecticut, and Sheryl Valentine of Mashpee, Massachusetts; three sons, James H. Valentine of Southbury, Connecticut, George F. Valentine of Jamestown and Robert W. Valentine of Essex, Vermont; and 10 grandchildren. Another son, George W. Valentine, Jr., died shortly after birth.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday, August 10, at 1 p.m. at Island Cemetery, Block Island. Immediately following the service, there will be a celebration of life at Smuggler’s Cove. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
