Message from the Town Manager
The following was submitted to The Block Island Times by Town Manager Maryanne Crawford:
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the Block Island community. I am your new Town Manager, Maryanne Crawford. Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome to the island, which, to me, reflects a strong sense of community and caring for one another. It’s palpable and refreshing.
I am a native Rhode Islander and spent decades renting a house in Minister’s Lot with my husband and children and we love the island.
I am reaching out to the Block Island community in light of the increase in COVID cases in the state of Rhode Island, and the surrounding New England states, to ask for your help. This past week we have had two positive COVID cases here. Appropriate contact tracing is being completed by the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH).
The next three weeks are critical. I would like to remind you all to continue to wear your masks out in public and in group settings, to social distance, and limit your contact group to the same 10 individuals. Most of us do that by habit alone. I have visited the ferry, the restaurants, and shops in town on my daily walks, and have largely been impressed with the steps that these venues take throughout the day to insure their customers’ confidence.
Let’s say thanks for their time-consuming efforts by doing our part.
Mask-up without having to be asked, use hand sanitizer, wash hands often, and maintain social distance.
We are all suffering from “COVID fatigue” on many levels. However, as in any battle, especially against an invisible foe, we cannot let our guard down or it will strike back hard and we will regret not having taken the simple steps. I know mentally it’s wearing, but we need to lean on each other for support and trust each other to do our part. We win as a community when each of us holds ourselves accountable for the greater good.
I remind you that asymptomatic testing is ongoing every Tuesday and Thursday at the rescue building. Testing is conducted from noon to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, no appointment necessary.
On Thursdays, the Department of Health is conducting the tests and appointments must be made at health.ri.gov. Dr. Warcup of the Medical Center has been providing periodic updates regarding COVID. The latest update can be seen here: https://youtu.be/ BlBN5wltErY.
By working together we can maximize the safety and health of all. No matter how trivial it may seem, it matters, and each of us can benefit the entire Block Island community.
