Louise Marthens, 88

Louise Reece Marthens, born Louise Despard Goff Reece, in Washington, DC in 1928, peacefully passed away the morning of July 27, 2016. She was married to Col. George Walker Marthens II, USAF (Ret.) on Sept. 8, 1951. Louise was a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

Louise was an independent, adventurous and extremely free-spirited woman, always up for a new and exciting adventure. A private pilot in the 1940s, she flew all around the country in the service of her father's business ventures and later in the company of her husband. Louise was an avid traveler, having circumnavigated the world by plane and cruise ships a number of times. Her passions included traveling with family and friends (especially on cruise ships), gardening, and always playing the peacemaker to all. Louise is survived by her daughters, Louise Reece Marthens of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Carol Anne Marthens of McKinney, Texas; sons George Walker Marthens III of Fairfax, Viriginia, and Bradford Goff Marthens of Block Island, R.I.; as well as two grandchildren, Georgia Lea Moody of Tacoma, Wash., and Bradford Goff Marthens II of Block Island.

Louise was the daughter of the late Congressman Brazilla Carroll Reece of Tennessee and Congresswoman Louise Goff Reece. A memorial service was held in Washington on Monday, Aug. 1. Additional service and interment will take at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
