Celebrating 25 years

To the Editor:

This past April 1 marked the 25th anniversary of the Block Island Lions receiving its charter from Lions Clubs International and, to mark this event, a well-attended “birthday party” was held last Friday. We thank our party committee, those who attended and the Kiley and McLaughlin families for the excellent venue, food, and entertainment at Yellow Kittens.

Thanks to retiring membership chairman Adrian Mitchell, we have become the third largest Lions Club in the state. Over the years we have raised and given away hundreds of thousands of dollars to individuals and organizations on the island.

The Club provides scholarship funds for outstanding graduates of the Block Island School and underwrites costs for many island and school activities.

Since 2000, the improvement of facilities at the Ball O'Brien Park has been the focus of much of our work. Funding comes from our annual Labor Day Clam Bake, two golf tournaments and occasional special fund raisers to assist islanders facing medical or financial crises.

Look for additional celebrations of our silver anniversary in The Block Island Times. Those interested in joining the Lions Club can contact new membership Chair Annie Hall at (401) 741-1893 or drop us a line to Box 1812, Block Island, R.I. 02807.
