An inadequate response

After hearing the news that Nurse Practitioner Liz Dyer had been terminated without cause in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 28, Block Island Medical Director Mark Clark said he would issue a statement. The statement, which can be read in full in the story that begins on page one, was sent to The Block Island Times on Wednesday morning.

After receiving the statement, The Block Island Times reached out to Dr. Clark for some clarification on several points, including whether Dyer’s termination would make him rethink his own resignation, why was Dyer fired after he resigned, was Dyer terminated for any reasons related to patient care, was the Medical Center fully staffed for the summer, and, just as importantly, who should Dyer’s list of primary care patients talk to about their health care moving forward?

We felt answers to these questions would alleviate the anxiety some people are feeling.

The paper received the following response from Dr. Clark, which is printed in full:

“The Medical Center continues to provide the highest quality care for all of our BIHS patients without interruption.”

“We are adequately staffed with our outstanding resident and visiting attending physicians to accommodate our heavy summer volume.”

“Aside from those clarifications, I have no further comment at this time.”
