How to live with hearing loss
A workshop for the hard of hearing, “Family and Friends: Life Skills for the Hard of Hearing,” will be held at the Island Free Library at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. Dr. Rachel-Ann Smith from the University of Rhode Island will be hosting the workshop.
“I worked with Dr. Smith and one of her audiology students in a support group last spring. I learned some great things about how to advocate for myself as a person with profound hearing loss living in a hearing world,” said Sue Brown Black, who organized the event. “The group taught us about the newest technology in hearing aids and assistive devices. We learned things like where to sit in a loud room, where to sit in a car, how to remind people to look at me when they talk, where to go for financial support, how to support loved ones with hearing loss.”
Dr. Smith will do an informative PowerPoint presentation, talk about the services offered through URI and answer questions about living with hearing loss.
“I hope that this presentation will help us kick start a support group on the island for the hard of hearing, our families and friends,” said Black.
