Gladys Kruchok, 91
Gladys (Jafferis) Kruchok, 91, of West Haven, Conn., died peacefully at Branford Hospice on Friday, April 10, 2015. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Katherine Jafferis. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Davis and husband Ray Davis, of Guilford, Conn. and Block Island; her son John Kruchok of Branford; granddaughter Tara (Monaco) Gallo; and great-grandson Joseph Gallo of Branford; granddaughter Tanya (Monaco) Ciarlegio , husband Gary Ciarlegio and great-grandaughter Natalie Ciarlegio of Middletown, Conn. She leaves behind brothers George Jafferis and wife Ann, and William Jafferis. After semi-retiring, she devoted the next 12 years as a parent aid for the Coordinating Council of Children in Crisis, bringing Yale undergraduates into families needing "big brothers and sisters." Under her leadership, volunteers doubled to around 50 and her ability to recruit and retain students in the demanding program exemplified her special gifts and love. She was awarded the New Haven Foundation's Elm Ivy Award in 1989. She also was a volunteer worker at hospice and at the Special Olympics.
Gladys loved the beauty of Block Island, and beginning in 1963 spent her vacations at The Surf Hotel. Children were her passion, and she did crafts with them on a picnic table outside the hotel. She loved the Cyrs and couldn't wait to get there every summer.
Her funeral took place at The Holy Transfiguration Church, New Haven, Conn., on April 14, 2015 and interment followed at Beaverdale Memorial Park in Hamden, Conn.
