Stories of Block Island women

Block Island is remarkable in so many ways, not the least of which is the fact that the town has so many women in so many influential positions.

Our School Principal, Library Director (and the staff), Town Finance Director, IT Specialist, Town Planner, Postmistress, Chair of the Planning Board, Chair of the Zoning Board, Chair of the Housing Board, four out of five members of the School Committee, Tourism Director, Chamber of Commerce President, Historical Society Director, Assistant to the Town Manager, Town Clerk and staff, Harbormaster, Bank Branch manager, leaders in conservation and land management, business owners and managers, the columnist for The Block Island Times for more than 25 years — all women.

It was reporter Rosemary Connelli’s idea to explore some of these stories for National Women’s History Month, and we begin sharing them this week.

It’s our way of saluting and respecting the essential work being done by the women of Block Island. We are happy to honor these individuals throughout the month — and beyond.
