Edgar Kelley, 1928 - 2022
Edgar A. Kelley, Jr., 93, of Tiverton, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Brookdale Sakonnet Bay. He was the longtime companion of Gertraud Poli of Austria and husband of the late Florence (Kelly) Kelley.
Born in Providence in 1928, he was the son of the late Edgar A. and Marie (Capelli) Kelley. A veteran of WWII, he served his country in the United States Army. Ed was a graduate of Providence College, Class of 1951. He was the owner and operator of the former E.A. Kelley Company in Providence, R.I. until his retirement when he then started a real estate company. Mr. Kelley was a recreational aviator who had a passion for flying. Ed first came to Block Island as a cabin boy aboard a swordfishing boat in the early 1940s. He later worked as a lifeguard at the town beach for several summers and developed a love for the slow, quiet island vibe. He brought his family to the island for summer vacations in the late 1960s and built a family summer house on the west side in 1972.
Including his companion, he is survived by six children: Edgar S. Kelley of Providence, Katherine M. Kelley of Little Compton, Peter E. Kelley of Providence, Barbara L. Kelley and her husband Peter F. Doyle of Little Compton, William K. Kelley and his wife Melinda Marye-Kelley of Houston, Texas and Christopher J. Kelley of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters: Mary Louise Bagdovitz of Florida and Patricia Myers of Florida; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was father of the late Robert J. Kelley and father-in-law of the late Henry R. Koehler and Sally O. Kelley.
Memorial Mass to which relatives and friends are invited will be Saturday, August 20, 2022, at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport, Mass. at 11 a.m.
Memorial Visitation will be Friday from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Potter Funeral Home in Westport, Mass.
