Dodged the rain
To the Editor,
On Monday, September 12, the Block Island Lions Club held its September tournament at the Foster Country Club. Even though the weather looked dismal while we were on the ferry, the rain stopped, and it ended up being a great day for golf.
Highlights of the day were: Women’s Longest Drive, Tammy Tyler; Women’s Closest to the Pin, Michelle Reeves; Men’s Closest to the Pin, Joe Straka; Men’s Longest Drive, Lee Rapp. The winning team was comprised of Chris O’Neill, Paul Henshaw, Tom Mahoney, and Chris Lischke. It was a big day for Tom Mahoney, who was also the winner of the 50/50 raffle.
All monies received benefit the Lions Club Scholarship Fund. Each year, one or two graduating seniors are awarded a scholarship and will continue to receive money for three additional years if the student is in good academic standing. We are currently aiding seven students.
This would not be possible without the support of the golfers and our tee sponsors: Interstate Navigation, Arnold Lumber, Mike Anderson, Gary Delaney, New England Airlines, The Heinz Group, Stix-Man Construction, VAL Construction, Johnson Electric, Tyler Electric, Omni Wealth Management, Billeri & McGarry Insurance Company, Block Island Recycling Management, Hull Suburban Propane, Payne’s Dock, The Spring House Hotel, The Manisses Hotel, and Willow Grove.
Thank you also to our gift certificate donors: Winfield’s, Los Gatitos, Kimberly’s, The Oyster Bar, and Foster Country Club.
Interstate Navigation deserves a very special thanks for providing free round-trip transportation on the ferry for both the July and September tournaments. Their continued generosity has proven invaluable to our fund.
The support of all those involved is appreciated by the committee members.
