BIPCo candidates night is Monday, Aug. 14
The Block Island Times and the Block Island Residents Association are sponsoring a candidates night on Monday, Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Block Island School. All eight candidates — Mary Jane Balser, Sean McGarry, Everett Shorey, Barbara MacMullan, Peter McNerney, Christine Grele, Jack Savoie and Bill Penn — have been invited. There will be questions posed to the candidates by representatives from the The Times, BIRA, and the audience.
Creating a municipal utility district is one of the most important steps Block Island has taken in many years. It was controversial, and remains so. There is also a lot of work to be done in upgrading and improving infrastructure, and in overseeing a smooth transition of assets and liabilities now owned by BIPCo to the new utility district. Who helps run the power company will be a key factor in these challenges.
It is important to say thank you to those who chose to run, and it will be equally important to come out and hear the views of the candidates on the future of the utility district. We know it’s a busy time of year, but we scheduled the event at 6 so that it will conclude by 7:30 p.m. for your convenience.
We hope to see you there.
