Renovations of the Fred Benson Beach Pavilion will be kicking off soon. That’s according to town Facilities Manager Sam Bird, who told The Block Island Times on Wednesday that the project’s contractor, Lincoln-based Mill City Construction, Inc., is in the process of “securing subcontractors, preparing submittals, crews, housing, etc.” Bird noted that the pavilion was made available to Mill City Construction on Sept. 18, but the general contractor has not yet begun construction.

Bird said the project is expected to be completed in late April and that most of the beach pavilion has been cleared out in preparation of construction. “We will be having a kickoff meeting soon and will cover all that and more in terms of Mill City’s plan for completing the work,” he said. “We will be reviewing the parking during that meeting as well — so far they have been very cooperative.”

Bird said the project will be a “light rehab,” and that $940,000 is available to fund the project, with $140,000 in contingency. The New Shoreham Town Council unanimously approved of awarding the contract to Mill City Construction at a Council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Mill City Construction bid $843,585 on the project during the bidding process.
