Barbara Foster Hobe, 93
Barbara Foster Hobe, beloved wife of the late John P. Hobe, passed away on December 29, 2020 at her home on Block Island, Rhode Island surrounded by her five children. She was born in New York City in October 1927 and grew up in Westchester County, New York. After attending the Katherine Gibbs School, she went to work at McKesson Robbins where she met her future husband, John. They were married in 1950 and raised five children in Emerson and Montclair, New Jersey.
Barbara, her husband John, and their five children spent their first summer on Block Island in 1964 after she found a small notice in the New York Times advertising a summer cottage for rent on what was at that time the Quillan property on Corn Neck Road. Three years later they purchased Cottage Farmhouse which became a gathering place for family and friends from far and wide. Fulfilling a long-held dream, Barbara and John retired to Block Island in 1980 where Barbara spent many a following summer trying to figure out what to do with the mountains of asparagus, beans, tomatoes, and zucchinis that John grew and delivered with great pride to her kitchen.
She was preceded in death by her sister Edith Foster Roberts and her brother William Thomas Foster.
She is survived by her children Barbara Hobe Wartman, Kathleen Hobe, Pamela Buol and her husband Tom, Chris Hobe and his wife Maegan, Mary Beth Jarrosak and her husband Ray; by grandchildren Kristin Wartman Lawless, Sarah Wartman, Brittany Boucher Gedney, Kaitlyn Boucher, Chris Buol, Tim Buol, Reilly Hobe, and Zack Hobe; and by great grandchildren Madeline Gedney and Wolf Lawless.
The family will celebrate her life in the coming year. For those wishing to honor Barbara’s memory, donations to the Block Island Medical Center would be much appreciated.
