And we have a winner!
It all started around noon on Tuesday when The Block Island Times received an alert from the Rhode Island Lottery Commission. Someone had purchased a winning ticket - $50,000, not the whole jackpot - at the Block Island Grocery for the Powerball drawing on Saturday, September 10, but the ticket holder had not come forward.
It was breaking news, and the story spread quickly on social media. Would it be an islander, would it be a tourist? But for the next 24 hours, and more, no one came forward to claim the winning ticket.
So, on Wednesday, just before the new closing time of 6 p.m. at the BIG, there was lots of excitement in the air when a woman came in, holding a Powerball ticket aloft, and joined the line at the front cashier’s station.
“Someone told me I should check my ticket,” she said. “I have all the numbers but one.”
Karen Martin ushered her over to the ticket-checking machine and the crowd fell silent to see if it would perform its winning-ticket tune. And it did. Clapping and cheers erupted from the onlookers, suddenly all too happy to
linger in the check-out lines.
Congratulations to the winner. We won’t mention her name in print, but if you know her, you know. Wish her well.
