45th Annual Run Around the Block
The Block Island Lions Club held its 45th Annual Run Around the Block 15k Road Race last Saturday after a two-year break due to Covid. This year’s race followed a slightly different course, leaving from Isaac’s Corner at the junction of Center and Cooneymus Roads before going around the west side of the island via Old Mill Road and then ending up at Fred Benson Town Beach.
Walking was an option and those choosing that started at 12:30 p.m., while runners took off an hour later.
When registering for the race, many participants appeared to have opted to say they were from Block Island, so it’s difficult to actually know where all those pictured here are from. But they sure look like they had a good time.
The overall winner of the 130-runner field was Chris Ritchie, 39 who listed his residence as Block Island. His winning time was 55:23.
Kelsey Lundberg, 25, from Salida, Colorado was the first female finisher with a time of 1:12:24. Overall she finished in 8th place. Lundberg was also the first female to complete the 2021 Block Island Triathlon.
