“I Love You.”

Through transparent pain,

a father’s trembling hand forms a prayer tent

with his daughter’s tiny palm and outstretched fingers.

Parent and child press opposite sides of the glass

as if their lives depend on hand-to-hand contact imprinted

in condensed breath of the spoken words я тебе люблю.

For how many centuries, in how many languages, will

this scene repeat, wounding even those who watch from

afar as ever-scarred searchers seek safety and peace?
