Multimedia artist Joshua Maldonado works with oil paint, wax medium, and spliced audio and video recordings in his latest work that will be on display at the Spring Street Gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. on October 1.
Equal parts abstract and impressionistic, “flickering (((light” is focused on the shifting tones of light sources, from sunshine glittering on water and through branches, to the strange flow of incandescent beams, culminating in
the fusion of all three in the title piece and its companion movie, an experimental film projected onto a 96 by 48- inch oil painting.
This short film is a digital collage of natural and artificial light filtering through woodland and aquatic vistas: double-exposed, time-stretched and overlapped. Besides these transitions, no special effects were used.
The film was shot on Block Island is accompanied by the music of Harold Budd and Brian Eno titled “An Arc of Doves.”
