Spier Construction, LLC.
RI REG. # 276
We design simple and functional buildings using traditional and classic forms. We feel strongly that every site and program is unique and deserves an individualized design, but also that every building should be efficient, durable, and timeless.
We’ve been privileged to work with some very talented architects and professional designers. As in every profession, these people can bring a new level of creativity and vision to a project. Collaboration between a good designer and an experienced builder can be a valuable learning experience for both, and can provide excellent value for their mutual clients.
In an age, economy and environment in which complete tear-down projects are becoming more prevalent, we take special pleasure in adaptive re-use of existing structures. We’ve installed modern interiors and systems in classic buildings, and turned modern buildings into attractive classics.
No job too small! We like building garages and barns, but we’ve also built everything from treehouses to outhouses to chicken coops and deer-proof garden fences.
Company Profile and Description
Spier Construction, LLC has been in operation on Block Island since 1987. For many years, we had a large crew and specialized in custom homes, along with renovation and repair work and the occasional commercial project. In 2005, we downsized to take a sabbatical, sailing around the world with our children. We completed that journey in 2009 and are back to full-time work. Our priorities in life have changed, though, so we are now remaining a smaller construction company. We offer the expertise that comes from decades of building large projects, combined with lower overhead and efficient hands-on management.
John Spier grew up on a farm in upstate New York, and has worked in construction since the 1970’s. He has a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and is also professionally certified as a Home Inspector and as a (BPI) Building Analyst.
As a sideline, John is also an author, primarily of magazine articles but also of a technical book on engineered framing materials.
On Block Island, John has served as Chairman of the Zoning Board, Captain of the Rescue Squad, and on the Board of Health Services. He is currently an elected member of the Block Island Housing Board.
Kerri Spier is a lifelong resident of Block Island, and has been doing construction work since 1987. She has a B.A. in Psychology from Brown University, and is currently a part-time graduate student at Salve Regina. She is also an artist and a builder of furniture, cabinetry, and musical instruments.
Kerri has served as Chairman of the School Committee, as a member of the Rescue Squad, and on various other boards and commissions. She is a regular volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
