Message from the Medical Center

The Block Island Medical Center has submitted the following message:

We at BIHS are continually striving to improve the quality, scope and efficiency of the healthcare services we provide for our Block Island Community and visitors.

Among many other recent improvements such as addition of physical therapy and risk reduction programs, addition of new staff, implementation of a women’s health program, and standardization of our financial assistance program, we are also currently implementing a new web-based electronic health record, Athenahealth, that we are certain will better serve the community.

The new program allows you to set up an account in the Patient Portal, securely communicate via email with your provider, schedule appointments or request prescription refills online, and view lab and other results as soon as they are available.

As we implement the new system, you will be asked to update demographic and insurance information, sign up for the Patient Portal, and complete standardized consents for your record.

We want to make sure we get your information exactly correct.

You can help:

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for your next appointment to make sure, with the help of our front office staff, that your registration information is completely up to date. Or, you may download the registration form at, complete it prior to your visit and bring it with you to save time.

Bring a copy of your insurance card, driver’s license, or photo ID to your next visit.

Sign up for the “Patient Portal” as soon as possible.

Be patient with us as we complete this valuable transition!

As always, please remember, we will provide medical attention to everyone, regardless of ability to pay, and financial assistance is available.
